Using a density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory methodology, we compute the many-body electronic structure and optical conductivity of NdNiO$_{2}$ under the influence of large scattering rates on the Nd($5d$) bands and including dynamical interactions on the Nd($5d$) orbitals with shifts of the Nd-Ni $d$-level energy difference. We find a robust conducting pathway in the out-of-plane direction arising from strong hybridization between the Ni-$d_{z^2}$ and Nd($5d$) orbitals. This pathway can be ``short-circuited'' if this hybridization is suppressed through large electronic scattering rates but is not reduced to zero even by very large beyond-DFT shifts of the Nd-Ni $d$-level energy splitting. The computed in-plane conductivity for NdNiO$_{2}$ predicts the material to be a ``good metal'' in contrast to experiments indicating the material is a ``bad metal'' or ``weak insulator''. Our results motivate future experiments measuring the $c$-axis resistivity as a proxy for the spectator bands and suggests the essential difference between the infinite-layer nickelates and the cuprates is dimensionality of their electronic structures., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We perform a comparative $2 \times 2$ real space cluster DMFT study on minimal models for NdNiO$_2$ and CaCuO$_2$ obtained from downfolding DFT states, using a Nambu formalism that allows for both superconducting and antiferromagnetic order. We produce a phase diagram in temperature and doping. We find that for the nickelate, like the cuprate, the stoichiometric compound is antiferromagnetic. We find superconductivity in a doping range bounded, with a small coexistence region, by the onset of antiferromagnetism at low doping and with transition temperature becoming immeasurably small at high doping. Superconductivity emerges at around the same hole doping for both compounds, but requires a larger deviation from half filling for the nickelate. Both antiferromagnetic and superconducting order lead to a partial gapping of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ Fermi surface sheet. Our similar results for the cuprate and nickelate suggest that nickelate superconductivity is cupratelike. We compare our results to the experimental phase diagram.

This article summarizes recent work on the many-body (beyond density functional theory) electronic structure of layered rare-earth nickelates, both in the context of the materials themselves and in comparison to the high-temperature superconducting (high-$T_c$) layered copper-oxide compounds. It aims to outline the current state of our understanding of layered nickelates and to show how the analysis of these fascinating materials can shed light on fundamental questions in modern electronic structure theory. A prime focus is determining how the interacting physics defined over a wide energy range can be estimated and "downfolded" into a low energy theory that would describe the relevant degrees of freedom on the $\sim 0.5$ eV scale and that could be solved to determine superconducting and spin and charge density wave phase boundaries, temperature-dependent resistivities, and dynamical susceptibilities., Comment: 34 pages, 10 figuress and 2 tables. The sensitivity of Density Functional Theory plus Dynamical Mean Field Theory calculations to different constructions of the correlated orbitals is investigated via a detailed comparison of results obtained for the quantum material NdNiO$_2$ using different Wannier and projector methods to define the correlation problem. Using the same interaction parameters we find that the different methods produce different results for the orbital and band basis mass enhancements and for the orbital occupancies, with differing implications regarding the importance of multiorbital effects and charge transfer physics. Using interaction parameters derived from cRPA enhances the difference in results. For the isostructural cuprate CaCuO$_2$, the different methods give quantitatively different mass enhancements but still result in the same qualitative physics.

We study the many-body electronic structure of the stoichiometric and electron-doped trilayer nickelate Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ in comparison to that of the stoichiometric and hole-doped infinite layer nickelate NdNiO$_2$ within the framework of density functional plus dynamical mean field theory, noting that Pr$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$ has the same nominal carrier concentration as NdNiO$_2$ doped to a level of 1/3 holes/Ni. We find that the correlated Ni-$3d$ shells of both of these low valence nickelates have similar many-body configurations with correlations dominated by the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital. Additionally, when compared at the same nominal carrier concentration, the materials exhibit similar many-body electronic structures, self energies, and correlation strengths. Compared to cuprates, these materials are closer to the Mott-Hubbard regime due to their larger charge transfer energies. Moreover, doping involves the charge reservoir provided by the rare earth $5d$ electrons, as opposed to cuprates where it is realized via the oxygen $2p$ electrons.

Sr$_2$MoO$_4$ is isostructural to the unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ but with two electrons instead of two holes in the Mo/Ru-t$_{2g}$ orbitals. Both materials are Hund's metals, but while Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has a van Hove singularity in close proximity to the Fermi surface, the van Hove singularity of Sr$_2$MoO$_4$ is far from the Fermi surface. By using density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory we determine the relative influence of van Hove and Hund's metal physics on the correlation properties. We show that theoretically predicted signatures of Hund's metal physics occur on the occupied side of the electronic spectrum of Sr$_2$MoO$_4$, identifying Sr$_2$MoO$_4$ as an ideal candidate system for a direct experimental confirmation of the theoretical concept of Hund's metals via photoemission spectroscopy., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

The demonstration of superconductivity in nickelate analogues of high $T_c$ cuprates provides new perspectives on the physics of correlated electron materials. The degree to which the nickelate electronic structure is similar to that of cuprates is an important open question. This paper presents results of a comparative study of the many-body electronic structure and theoretical phase diagram of the isostructural materials CaCuO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$. Important differences include the proximity of the oxygen $2p$ bands to the Fermi level, the bandwidth of the transition metal-derived $3d$ bands, and the presence, in NdNiO$_2$, of both Nd-derived $5d$ states crossing the Fermi level and a van Hove singularity that crosses the Fermi level as the out of plane momentum is varied. The low energy physics of NdNiO$_2$ is found to be that of a single Ni-derived correlated band, with additional accompanying weakly correlated bands of Nd-derived states that dope the Ni-derived band. The effective correlation strength of the Ni-derived $d$-band crossing the Fermi level in NdNiO$_2$ is found to be greater than that of the Cu-derived $d$-band in CaCuO$_2$, but the predicted magnetic transition temperature of NdNiO$_2$ is substantially lower than that of CaCuO$_2$ because of the smaller bandwidth.

We study the static and dynamical properties of isolated many-body quantum systems and compare them with the results for full random matrices. In doing so, we link concepts from quantum information theory with those from quantum chaos. In particular, we relate the von Neumann entanglement entropy with the Shannon information entropy and discuss their relevance for the analysis of the degree of complexity of the eigenstates, the behavior of the system at different time scales and the conditions for thermalization.
